A Message from Your Finance Committee Chair

First I want to thank you for trusting me with such an important position, I am truly honored.  Second, I want to thank you for your amazing generosity and faithfulness.  We adopted what some might say is a fairly tight budget this year but we are working toward some ideas to raise monies from sources outside the church as well as from inside.  As we are all aware we have lost some faithful members in the past few years which has offered some challenges to our financial position, but I am confident that we will continue to overcome these challenges together.  I plan to provide periodic updates throughout the year as to our financial situation so that we are all aware of our situation.  The first part of the year has been slightly slow on the income side but we have been faithful in our spending so it is all working out so far.  Please take a look at the quarterly statement you recently received.  If you have any questions please make sure you ask.

Yours in Christ,

Chris Venable

CAYA: Come As You Are

Sanctuary Ringers

Lakewood United Methodist Church is blessed to have a wonderfully dedicated group of individuals, affectionately known as the “Ding-a-lings,” who play in our handbell choir!  Playing handbells is quite the commitment; when a ringer is missing, it’s like having three or four “broken keys” on the piano, and the ringer’s notes are not played!  Our ringers are always present for rehearsals and to play for you during worship.

You may have noticed that we have two new bell ringers in our midst these days!  We are so happy to welcome Beverly Jinkerson and Mark Ridlen into the handbell choir.  Having additional members allows us to use more of the bigger bells owned by Lakewood UMC.

After Easter, we heard many people comment about the different bell techniques used in playing bells during “Entrada and Exuberance.”  You are used to seeing us “RING” the bells, but have you noticed the following bell techniques?

  • The Swing – Sometimes in longer notes, ringers will be asked to ring the bell first, and then rhythmically swing the bell down, behind them, and back up to the ringing position.  This results in a very cool, Doppler-like sound.
  • The Martellato – Instead of ringing the bell, we strike the bell against the table, giving a sharp, short sound.  In short, this technique is called a “Mart.”  If a ringer is swinging the bell and accidently hits the wall (which, of course, shouldn’t happen), this is jokingly known as a “Wal-mart.”

These are just two of the techniques that keep bell-ringing fun and challenging. If you’d ever like to try ringing, please join us for a rehearsal on Sunday morning at 11:30 a.m. - right after worship.

Last but not least….Many thanks to John Gill for doing such a great job with the bell choir during Mary Zaby’s illness.  We love you, John!!
