NEWS FROM OUR ASSISI HOUSES…
Dear Lakewood Friends,
Thank you so kindly for your warm and generous welcome to the ladies at the St. Francis and Clare Homes. Your gifts of love are a constant reminder of what a blessing it is to be in community with you. Many of you have heard Nicole Melki play the violin as she performed during the potluck service. Last fall, Nicole began a new after-school violin program in East Dallas for underserved elementary children with the help of Grace UMC. The program did so well in its pilot year they are expanding into a second class! This school year volunteers are needed to help from 3-4 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays, for academic tutoring, which will go on while Nicole is teaching another violin class. The program would love to have your help! This is a great opportunity to develop relationships with underserved children in our local neighborhood, and to uplift them in their studies. If you are interested, you can contact Nicole by email at Ubuntukidsdfw.com or phone at 405-209-3049.
Grace and Peace,
Nicole Melki

Dear Friends,
Thank you so much for welcoming the Francis and Clare house residents as a part of the Lakewood UMC family. You have been so hospitable and generous – from painting to “pounding.” You have helped us get settled, shared a multitude of household items and goodies, and extended such warmth. We are incredibly grateful to be connected with such an amazing congregation! In the coming weeks as we get more settled, we will be inviting you to join us in weekly community meals and a house blessing. We look forward to being in ministry with you!
Blessings,
Assisi Community Residents
Lakewood’s Legacy
Ministry intern Kathy Nations is exploring the history and development of Lakewood UMC and the Lakewood community. What memories, stories, artifacts, photos, or other treasures can you share that tell where Lakewood has been, and how we became the church we are today?
If you would tell your story, offer suggestions, or collaborate in this legacy project, please be in touch with Kathy at the church, or contact her at knations@smu.edu.

OCTOBER 31, 2015
5:30 - 7 p.m. - Church Parking Lot
Lakewood UMC will once again circle our cars in the parking lot on Halloween – trunks pointed in – and will give sweet treats to any neighbors who arrive. Plan to arrive a little early so we can get our cars all situated. If you would love to come have fun and need a ride, call the church and we will arrange to pick you up. It is always great fun for everyone – adults and children alike.
COMMUNITY GIVE BACK PROGRAM
Don’t forget to eat at Jerry’s Wood Fired Dogs, located in Lakewood on Gaston Avenue, on the third Sunday of the month (October 18) between 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Under this program, Jerry’s Wood Fired Dogs will give 10% of their Sunday sales between these hours to Lakewood UMC. You do not have to bring any coupons or flyers or even mention the church – it is automatic that 10% of all sales during those hours on our designated day will be sent to the church. Spread the word to your friends and family.
Thank you to the volunteers who worked so hard and long on our kitchen cleaning day on August 29th. Alan Noel, Genie Short, Tom and Nancy Fomby, along with Joan O’Brien, who helped us know where everything went, are to be congratulated for getting our church kitchen so clean!
YOUNG LIVES
The Young Lives group from Woodrow Wilson High School will begin meeting here again beginning Thursday, October 15, at 6 p.m. Volunteers are needed.
A CARD OF THANKS...
Hello Lakewood UMC!
I wanted to write and express my gratitude for the invitation to preach recently, as well as for the experience of worshiping our Lord with you. It may sound cliché, but is accurate, but from the moment my wife and I walked through the door we were greeted with hospitality and kindness. Several congregants engaged us in conversation and everyone greeted us with smiles. Even as a lifelong Methodist and an often boisterous extrovert, it can be difficult for me to adjust to new churches. I sometimes have trouble engaging with strangers in a church setting, but this was not the case with Lakewood. I felt right at home. The service was a moving and holy experience. I had a wonderful time preaching and sharing my story of the Bonhoeffer House. I would love to come back anytime! I would like to thank Rev. Dr. Landis for her kindness, for the invitation, and for her gift. It was stunning! I will continue to pray for your church, for your partnership with the Epworth Project, and for your continued growth as a robust community of faith. Thank you from the depths of my heart, and may God continue to bless you without ceasing.
Rev. Jonathan Grace
