Lakewood offers a variety of ways to engage with our community, from groups that use our building to events designed to draw our neighbors in for fun and fellowship! Here are a few examples of what we do:
Fair Trade Coffee and Chocolates
On the second Sunday of each month, the United Methodist Women of Lakewood UMC offer fair trade coffees and chocolates for sale after our worship services. In doing this, we support the United Methodist Committee on Relief's (UMCOR's) "Coffee Project," which works with small-scale farmers in Latin America, Africa, Asia and the United States as they build a better future for themselves and their families. Farmers involved in this project earn a fair price for their products, have access to affordable credit, and gain a long-term trading partner they can trust. With your support, these communities invest in education, health care, and agricultural improvements. The Lakewood chapter of the UMW uses proceeds from these sales to support local ministries such as the Wesley-Rankin Center, the Wilkinson Center, the Dallas Bethlehem Center and Crossroads Community Services.
Firehouse Ministries
Firehouse Ministries began many years ago as an after school program for elementary school children.
Every year the Firehouse hosts Lakewood's autumnal Craft Fair on the last Saturday of October.
Since the 2017-2018 school year, the Firehouse Ministries board "adopted" Dan D. Rogers Elementary so that we can provide ongoing support to our elementary school neighbors. As the summer rolls along, we are asking you to save magazines, yarn and fabric scraps, and the scraps at the end of your rolls of wrapping paper, so that we can donate these items to the art classes at Rogers!
Firehouse Ministries also supports the local chapter of Young Lives, a program for teen mothers based at Woodrow Wilson High School. Every month, Young Lives meets in our building as a fun way to hang out and learn from mentors outside of school.
Kindermusik
Our Kindermusik program is run by Purple Nest. Please visit purplenest.com for class schedules and information.
Trusted. Proven. Educational. And of course, fun! Kindermusik International is the world's leading provider of music and movement programs for young children, enjoyed by over 1 million families in more than 70 countries. We offer developmentally-specific music classes for kids from newborn to age seven. Our curriculum, based on the principals of Kodaly, Suzuki, and Orff, is taught by the best Educators in the business. And our mission? It’s simple. Music is the best vehicle for early childhood learning. We want to empower our Educators, parents, and teachers to instill a lifelong love of music and learning in their children.
AA and Al-Anon
Lakewood sponsors 4 separate Alcoholics Anonymous groups by providing weekly meeting space and opportunities for social events. We deeply respect the dedication of these individuals to recovery, and we invite their participation in our outreach programs in the community.
Please visit the Lakewood Group AA website to confirm meeting times.
Alcoholics Anonymous is an international fellowship of men and women who have had a drinking problem. It is nonprofessional, self-supporting, multiracial, apolitical, and available almost everywhere. There are no age or education requirements. Membership is open to anyone who wants to do something about his or her drinking problem.
Linden Grove Theatre Company
Since 2019, Linden Grove Theatre Company has learned about theater and rehearsed several of their shows at Lakewood UMC. For more information on Linden Grove, visit their website.
