COMING SOON -
LAKEWOOD SUMMER ARTS FAIRE
The 12th annual Lakewood Summer Arts Faire will take place September 12-13th right here in your Family Life Center. There will be approximately 25 artists filling the Fellowship Hall and hallway. Food and cold treats will be sold from the kitchen, and there will be live entertainment, including some young ballet students.
This event supports our church as each artist rents space from the church to participate. Also, the Lakewood Summer Arts Faire uses proceeds from the kitchen and silent auction to support art programs at area schools and other local area charities.
Volunteer opportunities will be available so be on the lookout for the sign-up sheets that will be in the narthex very soon.
So, please mark your calendars and plan to bring some friends to enjoy the wonderful art, and to help support your local artist community.
Thanks.
Alan Noel, Director, LSAF 2015
Wedding Congratulations to Megan Landis and Darren Smith who married here at Lakewood on August 8.
Words From Our Pastor…
We have had an amazing month! Dave and I are so grateful for you all, for your presence and your prayers for Megan and Darren on their wedding day. It was a wonderful day for us. Your care and hard work made it so lovely!
A big thank you to:
Becky Heflin, for the flowers in the garden.
Charlie and Cindy Estee, for the magical lights in the garden and the Fellowship Hall.
Nancy Fomby, for all of the beautiful flowers on the tables.
Joan O’Brien, for setting up, cleaning, washing, and dancing a jig all the while!
Thanks especially to the choir and John for perfect music.
The amazing clean-up crew who did an amazing job!
We all so enjoyed the Rev. Jonathan Grace and his message on Sunday, August 9th. He brought such life to us! And he helped us all see the possibilities for the students living in our houses.
We welcomed our new intern, Kathy Nations. We will be blessed over and over by the gifts she will bring! I am looking forward to her first sermon on September 13. She will be teaching a class on Tuesday nights at 7 p.m. beginning September 15.
We welcomed and celebrated with the young women living in the St. Clare and St. Francis houses! I cannot wait to see what they do first. Thanks to everyone who brought “pounding” gifts. Thanks to Nicole for the beautiful violin music! And thanks to all of the painters at the St. Clare house – the new blue is beautiful!
We sent two of our own to college – Meagan Freeman back to Hampshire and Andrew Venable off to his first year at LeTourneau.
We were grateful to hear Adam White’s Commissioning sermon. His gifts are apparent, and we look forward with him to his life in ministry. Perhaps we should send him a chocolate bunny or two!
And thanks to Ed Larroca for his faithful watering – anybody will water a pretty green tree, but it takes faith to water a brown one! A pat on the back from each of us will help keep him encouraged.
Peace,
Gayle

HOW MUCH DO YOU KNOW ABOUT LAKEWOOD'S LEGACY?
Ministry intern Kathy Nations seeks your assistance as she delves into the history of Lakewood UMC and the Lakewood community. How can you help? What stories, artifacts, photos, or other treasures can you share that tell where Lakewood has been, and how we became the church we are today?
If you would tell your story, offer suggestions, or participate in this project, please be in touch with Kathy at the church, or contact her at knations@smu.edu.
NEW CREATIVE SPIRITUALITY CLASS TO START SOON
God speaks to us in creative acts of everyday life. How is God getting our attention in ordinary, daily life? When we create, we reflect the image of the God who made us – the Creator who formed us in God’s image. Think you’re not a “creative type”? Think again.
Do you sing, bake, parent, garden, schedule, counsel, pray intentionally, build, design, bring order out of chaos, or bring your inborn gifts to the table at work, home, or in recreation? You are creating. The image of God in you is reflecting God’s artistry.
Mull that over, and then join us for a six-week small group to discover how each of us reflects God’s image in our everyday lives. Whether you consider yourself a creative person or not, there’s an “art part” in each of us, in places you might not expect.
In the upcoming small group, “Imaging God,” we’ll look at the myriad ways God reveals who God is through God’s image in YOU.
We’ll meet Tuesday nights at 7:00 p.m. beginning September 15 at the church. With questions or to sign up, please contact Kathy Nations, ministry intern, at knations@smu.edu.
DISCIPLE CLASSES TO RESUME
Now that summer is coming to a close, the two Disciple classes will begin meeting once again. Disciple I will resume their class on Thursday, September 17 at 7 p.m. Disciple IV class will begin again on Sunday, September 20.
NOTE OF THANKS
Dear friends at Lakewood UMC,
I want to thank you for the warm and joyful welcome extended to Tommie and me on our first Sunday with you, August 16. God is so good to bring me here, and I thank you for allowing me to be part of this community of faith.
In your hospitality you are the hands and feet of Christ, forming the body that is the church, the Body of Christ. May we journey together in harmony and grace, and find our shared endeavors bear sweet fruit, for the Glory of God.
With a grateful heart ~ Kathy Nations
COMMUNITY GIVE BACK PROGRAM
Jerry’s Wood Fired Dogs, located in Lakewood on Gaston Avenue, has invited Lakewood UMC to participate in their Community Give Back Program where they will give 10% of their Sunday sales between 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. to a local church. Lakewood UMC has been designated the third Sunday of each month, beginning September 20 through the end of the year. You do not have to bring any coupons or flyers or even mention the church – it is automatic that 10% of all sales during those hours on our designated day will be sent to the church. So, mark your calendars to take your family to Jerry’s Wood Fired Dogs for lunch on the third Sunday of each month. And spread the word to your friends, soccer teams, book clubs, etc. Not only will you have a good lunch but you will be helping your church as well.
